A Melody of Memories: The Harp Room Reunion
Subdued ceiling lights cast a gentle glow, illuminating the luscious sheen of a magnificent Kayserburg piano positioned stage left. Regal pedal harps and vibrant lever harps, each a masterpiece, adorned the stage. On stage right, Sabina Gatchalian and Anastasia Agabin were immersed in their rehearsals—Sabina perfecting her own composition, and Anastasia practicing 'Aljonushka.' Meanwhile, Jo-Ann Cerdenia of Harp Room gracefully rose from her seat to welcome me into the Kayserburg Recital Hall as I entered. These were just a few of the striking details that captured my attention upon entering the hall. On that day, I had the honor of emceeing this nostalgic event titled, "Harp Room Reunion." Despite the years since my first hosting at Harp Room, this event had a distinctive charm that was palpable. The inherent elegance of the Camac and Kayserburg instruments significantly contributed to the sophisticated atmosphere.
A Heartfelt Gathering
However, the essence of the "Harp Room Reunion" was Jo-Ann Cerdenia’s heartfelt return from Australia. It was her first official gathering with both past students and those whom she had only met online after the challenging two-year pandemic. Amidst intense focus on their harps, students occasionally shared warm glances and smiles with their esteemed teacher, Jo-Ann. This deep mutual respect highlighted the reunion's importance, as it was a celebration of shared memories, intertwined dreams, and a sense of wonder within a sacred hall. Clearly, the event wasn't just a reunion but a reaffirmation of the bonds forged through music, strengthened even by unexpected times of isolation.
The Venue: Kayserburg Recital Hall
Owned by Reginald and Kimberly Tan of Sounds Kradle, Inc., the Kayserburg Recital Hall is an emblem of musical excellence. SoundsKradle aims to nurture the skills and character of musicians, shaping them into effective and accountable leaders in the Philippines. It was only fitting that Mr. Reginald Tan opened the event with welcoming remarks, which were followed by a solemn prayer led by Mr. Hans Gideon Cerdenia, the Manager of Harp Room. As Mr. Tan's opening remarks resonated through the hall, it was clear that Sounds Kradle's commitment to nurturing musicians was not merely rhetoric but a reality in action. In the same spirit, Hans's prayer brought a deep sense of reverence to the event, grounding it in gratitude and togetherness. His words reminded us of music's spiritual essence—its power to unite and uplift us all.
A Showcase of Talent
The heart of the Harp Room Reunion lay in the performances. As one by one Karen Agabin, harpist-singer Eliza Gregorio, Lei Azarcon, Hadassah Schein Padua, Nina Pascual, and Anastacia Agabin chose their harp and began to play, the hall filled with ethereal melodies. Witnessing how these gifted harpists have grown in their craft and musical expression over the years, I could describe their metamorphosis as nothing short of outstanding. From Karen's refreshing start all the way to her daughter's breathtaking finale, what a delight it was to observe the intricate dance between human skill and these exquisite musical instruments. These harps, renowned for their sublime sound and graceful design, became extensions of the artists’ souls. Harp Room has played a pivotal role in increasing the accessibility of the harp in the Philippines through its collaboration with Camac Harps France—a globally renowned harp manufacturer. Each Camac harp embodies exceptional design and masterful craftsmanship, transforming celestial music into a terrestrial experience.
A Virtual Harp Success: Jo-Ann's Online Sessions
Teaching the harp, which is known for its soulful melodies, is already a complex task in person. Now, imagine the added challenge of conveying these intricate instructions online. Astonishingly, from Teacher Jo-Ann’s online harp lessons emerged three new exceptional protégées: Liz Fajardo, Trisha Mendez, and Sabina Gatchalian. For Liz, who had just turned 35, Harp Room Reunion marked a poignant debut as a harpist. Overcoming her past fears of playing the piano and violin in public, Liz bravely took the stage to showcase her newfound love for the harp. With heartfelt courage, she dedicated that night to her late father, turning her performance into a tribute of love and artistry.
Joining Liz in their first live harp recital were Trisha and Sabina. Experiencing only virtual lessons with Teacher Jo-Ann, these talented harpists rose to the occasion and delivered performances that were truly exceptional. Trisha, a versatile musician with a background in piano, reclaimed her musical brilliance, enchanting the audience with her harp performance. Sabina, now a composition student at the UP College of Music, mesmerized everyone with her original pieces, "The Burning at Mekong" and "Harvest Season in the Valley."These achievements demonstrate that geographical boundaries cannot stifle the passion and determination of artists. With Teacher Jo-Ann Cerdenia's exceptional talent for virtual harp instruction, music effortlessly transcends distance and obstacles.
A Delightful Twist
During the event, Jo-Ann added a playful touch to the reunion by introducing trivia games and prizes, infusing the event with a lively twist. With most of the trivia questions centered around the historical beginnings and intriguing creation of this famed instrument, this interactive segment was well-received. The series of intermissions enhanced the spirit of camaraderie and community among attendees. Additionally, the Camac bag prizes proved to be a delightful and unexpected bonus, bringing a sense of childlike delight to the faces of the winners.
